The Area

Portnablagh, Co. Donegal

The Lime Kiln is located in the seaside village Portnablagh with its small beach and fishing harbour only 10 mins walk from the property. From the shoreline at the harbour you look out over the broad expanse of Sheephaven Bay towards to imposing cliffs of Horn Head. The Atlantic waters are ideal for sea fishing and boats can be chartered from the harbour. For fresh water fishing, the beautiful Sessiah Lake is located right beside The Lime Kiln - you can fish here or just take a leisurely walk along its shores.

The main beach is at the near by village of Dunfanaghy, it is the golden Killahoey Strand and a brief walk away is the secluded picturesque Tranmore Strand. The equally splendid beaches of Marble Hill, Falcarragh and Ards are a brief drive away and all are excellent for both family and avid water sports enthusiasts alike– sea kayaking, wind surfing and diving being very popular in the region.


Things to do

Dunfanaghy Golf Club

Dunfanaghy is highly recommended for all but the most serious of golf tours. Traditional and unpretentious, it is a good golf course and has simply stunning scenery. It will eat a slice alive but otherwise should provide the chance for a respectable score. But will you survive the 19th?!

Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park is more than 10000 hectares of unspoiled Donegal countryside. There are mountains, lakes, glens and woods with nature trails and guided tours. The centre-piece of the park is the 19th century castle with its ornate gardens.The Visitors Centre provides an audio-visual display and exhibits that tell the history of the park.

The Lime Kiln dates back over 150 years. Rescued from potential demolition, the building has been utterly transformed. A beautiful blend of old, new and is cleverly eco- friendly.

When entering this stone beauty you immediately feel the spacious, open yet cozy atmosphere of a well designed home. A home designed for a family who wants to be close, yet have areas for relaxing and entertaining.

The dramatic entry with high ceilings leads into the kitchen with traditional range and kitchen island with modern appliances.

The entrance leads upstairs to a mezzanine floor, with family sitting room and outdoor veranda with views of the ocean beyond.

A unique and special feature is the dramatic ground floor cave dining room and cosy fireside sitting room, with its vaulted ceilings and natural stone walls. These rooms are built onto the hillside and one wall is exposed to show off the natural rock face. A traditional stove is set into a 15 ft fireplace. One easy flick of a switch turns on instant heat for a eco friendly pellet burning fire. Homely and cozy in an instant!

The bedrooms are newly built adjoining the old Lime Kiln, however the traditional stone slab flooring gives a feeling of continuity and flow from the cave though the main level of the building. Cleverly the under floor heating gives a toasty underfoot feel. Two large double bedrooms, one with en suite shower, the other has a separate bathroom with walk in shower. Both bedrooms are light and spacious and have patio doors leading to the outdoor courtyard.

On request the spacious mezzanine floor can be set up with two single beds for visiting guests. We hope that you will enjoy this stunning home and surrounding area.
